Basically Books was established by David and Christine Reed on a whim and a dream in November of 1985. Seemingly filled with an abundance of confidence and ambition, David made a sign that said 'Basically Books, since 1985.'

Now, 40 years and several evolutions later, Basically Books is a foundation of the Hilo community, providing a place for readers and author events, local makers, and a wide variety of fun and educational toys for children.

A heavy specialization in Hawaii's vibrant native and local culture is complemented by curated selections of staff favorites, classics, community recommendations, and fun beach reads. Our Keiki Corner encourages children to play, to read, and to learn, and there is always a fun souvenir or a perfect gift for any age.

Now a multi-generational affair, with daughter Stacey, Basically Books continues to celebrate Hawaii and encourage literacy, curiosity, and the joy of words.
