APRIL IS NATIONAL POETRY MONTH
Poetry is an art form that is best experienced as a live performance. When poetry is read the listener hears the writer's rhythm, pauses, emphasis, and timing. Consider how Shakespeare comes alive on the stage more than on the written page. To kick off National Poetry month here on Hawaii Island, Basically Books is hosting a poetry reading evening on First Friday, April 7 beginning at 6 pm, at 160 Kamehameha Ave. in downtown Hilo. Two guest poets are visiting from Maui. Dr. Ayin Adams will read from For the Love of Black Men and Life Cannot Live Without Death. Dr. Kathryn Waddell Takara, a retired UH Manoa professor presents, Shadow Dancing: $elling $urvival in China, the third book in her trilogy.
Renshi is a form of "linked" poetry that is a social affair, with poets taking turns writing. A collaborative poetry pioneered by Makoto Ooka in the 1980s, it is a modern development of traditional Japanese renga and renku, but unlike these it does not adhere to traditional strictures on length, rhythm, and diction. Three members of a local Renshi poetry group will share their writing - Dina Kageler, Ma'ata Tukuafu and Kanani Aton.
Initiated in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets, National Poetry Month has become the largest literary celebration in the world with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets celebrating poetry’s vital place in our culture. The interactive 2017 National Poetry Month Poster is a downloadable PDF with images linked to each related poem. Poster, Lesson Plans, Classroom Activities and other resources are available at poets.org.
Basically Books invites our community to participate in this celebration of poetry and to support our local writers. For more information phone 961-0144 or visit www.basicallybooks.com. For event information and to keep up with happenings visit Facebook.com/BasicallyBooksHilo.
